Gematria is an ancient practice centered around assigning numeric value to words or phrases in order to uncover hidden meanings and relationships. It originated with the Hebrew alphabet and uses letters to represent numerical values. Gematria is found in many cultures, though it has its roots in the Hebrew tradition and was used extensively by early Kabbalists (Jewish Mystics).
Gematria works by assigning each letter of a language a numerical equivalent. In the case of Hebrew, which has 22 letters in its alphabet, each letter is assigned a number based on its placement within the alphabet (1-22). By assigning numbers to words or phrases, one can derive various correspondences and deeper meanings. For example, if the word for "God" is given a numerical equivalent of 26, one can then make numerous (even seemingly "magical") associations with other numbers or words that have the same numerical value.
The practice of gematria has been used for centuries as a way to explore deeper spiritual truths and as an aid to bible interpretation. Notable examples include Isaac Newton who used gematria to help decipher secrets hidden in scriptures, as well as C.G Jung who integrated gematria into his work with symbols and archetypes.
